As part of constructing our carbon capture facility, we have cast two foundations using CCS cement – cement in which the CO2 emitted during production has been captured and permanently stored. Unlike traditional cement, this results in near-zero climate impact, making it another important initiative to minimize the environmental footprint of the project.

– Every measure we can take to reduce the climate impact of building our carbon capture plant is fantastic—from operating construction vehicles on renewable fuel and using recycled steel in the pipe bridge to these foundations. This is especially important to us in this project, as its entire purpose is to deliver negative emissions, says Josef Guttenkunst, Project Manager responsible for the civil works and the new quay.

Each foundation consists of 40 cubic meters of concrete and provides essential support for the building’s façade. Skanska carried out the casting on July 28, and the concrete retains the same properties as traditional concrete.

The cement, called evoZero, comes from Heidelberg Materials’ plant in Norway, where carbon capture technology has been installed. The captured CO2 is stored by Northern Lights at the same offshore site, deep beneath the North Sea, where Stockholm Exergi will store its renewable carbon emissions once the facility is operational.
