Stockholm Exergi is bringing scale and permanence to carbon removal by building one of Europe’s first large-scale BECCS projects.
Beccs Stockholm is being retrofitted into our existing Värtan combined heat and power plant, which is one of Europe’s largest biomass-based CHP plants. This will demonstrate how established energy infrastructure can become infrastructure for permanent carbon removal.
Beccs Stockholm brings together the resources needed to deliver carbon removal efficiently and at scale: Sweden’s abundant forestry residues and sustainable biomass, established local transport infrastructure and proximity to permanent geological storage in the North Sea.
Stockholm Exergi is building the infrastructure for the full value chain. Once captured at Värtan, the biogenic CO₂ will be liquefied and transferred to Stockholm’s Energy Port, before being shipped to Northern Lights’ storage site off the coast of Norway and permanently stored in geological formations 2,000 metres beneath the seabed.
Fully operational in December 2028, Beccs Stockholm will permanently remove up to 800,000 tonnes of CO₂ from the atmosphere every year.
By proving that large-scale engineered carbon removal can be integrated into existing infrastructure, Beccs Stockholm is helping lay the foundations for a new European carbon removal industry.
