Construction of Beccs Stockholm – One of Europe’s First Large-Scale Projects for Carbon Removal.
Stockholm Exergi has initiated work to build a full-scale bio-CCS (Bio-Energy with Carbon Capture and Storage, BECCS) facility at the Värtan combined heat and power plant in Hjorthagen. The facility represents a key piece in the puzzle to achieve both Sweden’s and the EU’s climate targets – and is one of the first projects of its kind in Europe.
The facility is planned to be operational in 2028. In February 2024, Stockholm Exergi was granted the necessary environmental permit, and in early 2025, the company was awarded public funding through the Swedish Energy Agency’s reverse auction – a major milestone in making the project a reality.
The facility will be integrated into the existing CHP plant and include several components:
The plant is being built in collaboration with the Italian company Saipem, which is responsible for design, procurement and construction. The architectural design is being developed in close dialogue with the City of Stockholm to ensure the facility fits naturally into the urban landscape at Värtahamnen.
Once completed, the facility will be able to capture up to 800,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year – more than the total annual emissions from road traffic in Stockholm. This marks a significant step in the transition towards an energy supply with net-zero emissions.
