Stockholm Exergi is building one of the world’s largest facilities for removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere
At Stockholm Exergi, we have set our sights on large-scale capture and storage of carbon dioxide using BECCS at our bioenergy-generation plant in Stockholm’s Värtan neighbourhood: Beccs Stockholm.
BECCS (Bio energy with carbon capture and storage) is a technique for permanently removing biogenic CO2 from the atmosphere. Combining CO2 capture with heat recovery in Europe’s largest biomass-based Combined Heat and Power plant in Stockholm, we will capture and permanently store large quantities of biogenic CO2, resulting in carbon removal from the atmosphere and creation of so-called negative emissions.
This is the third episode in Stockholm Exergi’s mini-documentary series about the construction of BECCS in Stockholm, a new facility for capturing and permanently storing biogenic carbon dioxide.
From technology to climate solution – BECCS can help the world meet its climate targets?
How can capturing and permanently storing carbon dioxide help the world reach its climate targets? In the third episode of Stockholm Exergi’s mini-documentary series, we meet climate researcher Mathias Fridahl and Egil Nybakk, director and responsible for BECCS Stockholm. They talk about why reducing emissions alone is no longer enough, Sweden’s potential to lead the way and what it will take to scale up the technology. Beyond the technical solutions, success will depend on investment, supportive policies and a functioning market for permanent carbon removals.
Only during the first ten years of operation Beccs Stockholm will contribute to 7.83 Mt CO2e of absolute green house gas emission being removed from the atmosphere. Due to Beccs being a highly efficient, long-term method for storing CO2 is it considered as a vital step in reaching the EU-objective of Climate neutrality by 2050.
In addition to producing concrete climate benefits, Beccs Stockholm also intends to accelerate the development of a new market for net carbon removals.
The European Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET Plan) identify the technique as one of the priority actions for accelerating the energy system’s transformation. Additionally, it highlights the importance of the technique becoming cost-effective and gaining public acceptance, to eventually be commercially developed.

Bio-CCS is a cost-effective way to capture biogenic carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. However, it represents a significant investment for a single company. Therefore, the project’s financing stands on three pillars: government support, EU funding, and substantial revenue from companies that purchase carbon credits from us (to offset their carbon emissions). All parts are necessary.
