BECCS is a cost-effective way to capture biogenic carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. However, it represents a significant investment for a single company. Therefore, the project’s financing stands on three pillars: government support, EU funding, and substantial revenue from companies that purchase carbon credits from us (to offset their carbon emissions). All parts are necessary.
Swedish Government support Stockholm Exergi is awarded funding through the Swedish Energy Agency’s reverse auction for Bio-CCS. The approved support amounts to just over SEK 20 billion and will be paid out continuously for up to 15 years, starting from the initiation of geological storage. Stockholm Exergi is awarded funding through the state support auction for Bio-CCS.
Voluntary Market Many companies are now interested in contributing to slowing down climate change by purchasing negative emissions. An increasing number of companies are setting ambitious climate goals and plans to reach “net zero.” These companies and organizations form a rapidly growing commercial market for negative emissions and represent the majority of our revenue.
While Beccs Stockholm benefits from a combination of public funding and carbon removal sales, most of these revenues will only begin to be realized once the plant becomes operational in December 2028. The capital expenditure required during the construction phase is therefore financed through Stockholm Exergi’s balance sheet and corporate financing.
