BECCS: Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage
BECCS is a carbon removal process that uses biomass that have already absorbed CO₂ from the atmosphere. That biomass is used to generate energy and the resulting CO₂ emissions are captured and permanently stored.

BECCS is uniquely positioned at the intersection of energy and climate. By capturing biogenic CO₂ from biomass-based energy production, it enables permanent carbon removals while continuing to provide renewable heat, power, and industrial energy. When integrated into district heating or industrial systems, much of the capture energy can be recovered and reused, making BECCS one of the most resource-efficient pathways to large-scale carbon removals.
