A complex project with many important milestones
| Year | Event | Details |
|---|---|---|
| 2020 | Research & Development | We began studying how carbon capture could work at our existing bioenergy plant in Stockholm. |
| 2021 | European support | Beccs Stockholm was selected for support through the EU Innovation Fund, helping us develop the full-scale project. |
| 2022 | Developing the design | Engineering studies helped turn the concept into a plan for a full-scale facility. |
| 2023 | Preparing to build | We submitted the environmental permit application and continued developing the design, funding and commercial agreements needed for an investment decision. |
| 2024 | Key agreements secured | The project received its environmental permit and signed major carbon removal agreements with Microsoft and buyers represented by Frontier. |
| 2025 | Final Investment Decision | After securing Swedish government support and arrangements for transporting and storing the CO₂, Stockholm Exergi’s Board made the final investment decision on 27 March. Construction began that immediatly. |
| 2026 | The facility takes shape | Construction advanced at Värtan. The main building foundation was handed over to the plant contractor in September, followed by the first structural steel. |
| 2027 | Building the full system | Work is scheduled to continue on the capture and liquefaction equipment and the connections to the existing plant. |
| 2028 | First CO₂ shipment | The facility is scheduled to begin capturing CO₂, with the first shipment for permanent geological storage planned before the end of the year. |
| 2029 | Commercial operations | Beccs Stockholm is targeted to enter commercial operation, delivering permanent carbon removals through the completed capture, transport and storage chain. |
