Stockholm Exergi produces district heating, district cooling and electricity, and recovers energy from waste, excess heat and biofuels. By using resources already in circulation, we reduce both waste and emissions. We invest in future solutions – such as large-scale carbon capture, battery storage and digital energy services that help businesses, property owners and housing cooperatives use energy more efficiently and gain better control over their costs.

Together, we are building a robust and resource-efficient energy system that contributes to making Stockholm one of the world’s leading capital cities in sustainability.

District heating is reliable and convenient

District heating and district cooling are reliable, convenient and easy to use. District heating provides heating and hot water without requiring much attention. District cooling is an effective solution for keeping shops, hospitals and offices comfortably cool. At the same time, both systems use resources efficiently and support circular energy flows.

For most people in Stockholm, district heating is what keeps homes warm. It also provides hot water for showers and taps. District heating offers a reliable and convenient solution for businesses, housing cooperatives and private homes alike.

In Stockholm, we prioritise renewable and recovered energy sources for heating – today, only a small share of district heating is produced using fossil oil.

As an energy partner, we offer a range of services that help our customers optimise their heating systems, making everyday life with district heating simpler and more predictable.

District cooling – one of Stockholm’s lesser-known climate solutions

District cooling is ideal for keeping indoor environments comfortable in shops and offices. It is also widely used in data centres, hospitals, industrial facilities and other operations. Stockholm has the world’s largest district cooling system, available across most of central Stockholm as well as in areas such as Kista/Akalla, Nacka, Skärholmen, Vilunda and Älvsjö.

District cooling plays an important role in reducing emissions from cooling. It is already used by hundreds of companies. Thank you to those already contributing – and welcome if you are looking to replace local cooling units. In addition to reducing emissions, district cooling offers a reliable solution, frees up space and increases flexibility.

Sustainable development is central to our work

Stockholm Exergi provides essential services and has a responsibility to contribute to sustainable development. We provide heating when it is cold and cooling when it is warm. Our goal is to reach net zero climate impact by 2035 by reducing greenhouse gas emissions as far as possible and addressing remaining emissions through permanent carbon removals.

We manage Stockholm’s waste and recover resources, while also supporting initiatives that create opportunities for people outside the labour market. A key part of our sustainability work is ensuring that our suppliers provide good working conditions.

Stockholm among the first cities to capture carbon at scale

At Stockholm Exergi, we work to contribute to sustainable development and to address climate change. One of our key initiatives is carbon capture and storage, enabling permanent carbon removals.

In early 2025, a decision was made for Stockholm Exergi to build one of the world’s largest facilities for capturing and permanently storing biogenic carbon dioxide. Read more about Beccs Stockholm
