With support from the Swedish Energy Agency, Stockholm Exergi has operated a dedicated research facility for bio-CCS since 2019.
Since 2019, a small-scale research facility has been connected to our bio-combined heat and power plant (bio-CHP) in Värtan. While carbon capture as a technology is already proven, the purpose of the research facility is to evaluate and fine-tune bio-CCS specifically for our site in Värtan.

Here are some examples of what we do at the research facility:

Erik Dahlén, Head of R&D at Stockholm Exergi, demonstrates how carbon capture works in our research facility.
Stockholm Exergi is at the forefront of developing bio-CCS – the technology that captures and stores biogenic carbon dioxide, thereby creating negative emissions. How the technology works and why we’re investing in it draws great interest both nationally and internationally.

Several visits to Stockholm Exergi have attracted significant attention from around the world. In October 2022, the Swedish Royal Court chose to visit our facility as part of a state visit with the Dutch Royal Family. We have also welcomed Sweden’s current Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, former Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, the entire current Swedish government, and the Chancellor of Austria.
Visitors range from students and researchers at universities to political leaders, business representatives, and customers. Both national and international media have shown great interest in Stockholm Exergi’s journey to enable carbon removals.
