Annual and Sustainability Report 2024

Environment

Our new climate target clearly demonstrates where we want to be by 2035. Everything we do is a step towards fulfilling the Paris Agreement, and we meet society’s and our customers’ demands for sustainable electricity and heat production.

Climate targets that support the Paris Agreement

Our strategy
  • We will offer competitive energy services and waste treatment with net zero climate impact, enabling our customers to step-by-step achieve their climate goals
  •  We will also offer permanent carbon credits on the voluntary market through the capture and geological storage of biogenic carbon dioxide generated by our biofuel energy production
Priorities
  • Develop products and services that meet customers’ climate goals and drive the transition
  • Phase out fossil oils by 2032
  • Start-up of BECCS to produce permanent negative emissions by 2028
  • Preparatory work for CCS in waste incineration to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and produce permanent negative emissions
  • Reduce emissions from transports
2024 targets
  • CO2eq emissions per kWh of total energy < 65 gram per kWh (as from 2025)
  • District heating climate performance: < 45 gram per kWh
  • Long-term target: Stockholm Exergi’s operations have a net zero climate impact across the entire value chain by 2035

District heating improves Stockholm’s environment

Our strategy

  • We reduce emissions to air and water, locally and regionally, by using the best available technology
  • We safeguard the environment by assuming responsibility and imposing demands across the entire value chain
  • We are a good neighbor that has regard for the local environment when operating and developing our production facilities
Priorities
  • New distribution solutions for resource-efficient district heating
  • Energy management system to optimize our own use of energy in our production processes
  • Develop the control system for sustainable biofuels
  • Circular solutions: introduce cost model for waste management that incentivizes more sorting of plastics
  • Phase out chemical products that are hazardous to health or the environment
  • Systematically eliminate operational disruptions that reduce availability of primary production facilities and cause environmental disturbances
